The Put Away: The Reason We Hit all the Other Shots

Updated: Mar 15, 2022

The higher the level of play, the more important put away opportunities become. Whether you drive a high ball at your opponent's feet or angle the shot away, the important thing is for your put away shot to turn the point - either by ending it on that shot or by setting in motion shots that will give you another opportunity to end it.

Recognize and take advantage of your opportunities - and there's nothing better than a put away opportunity. But the other side of that coin is there's no greater squander of advantage than missing a put-away shot. If you find yourself getting overly excited when you recognize the advantage you suddenly have when a ball pops up - and you shank the ball against the back fence - you may need to work on your mind, not your swing. Try to keep your focus and energy levels on the court more constant without so many rises and falls. Meditation can help but so can simple breathing exercise you can do while on the court. You want to be a cat while playing pickleball. Calm, focused, confident - and ready to pounce.
